Andi hopes there’s another way around finally telling Toby what’s been going on. Because after almost being blown up there’s less destructive ideas on her mind.
She can’t imagine no one recognized that he’s left for the same week she did. ( because they’ve all been taken him for granted and she can understand why, but she can’t, won’t do that herself.) But she can’t think of anyone else to share the Maryland beach with, even a hazy and burning day like this.
Charlie wades out from the water, he’s been doing a little bodysurfing on the waves, and she’s been watching sipping the iced tea she brought in the thermos, almost finishing it as the July sun burned her.
They go into the hotel and the heat radiates away from her skin. Charlie kisses her, on the lips, on her neck, on the part of her back that will be red in ten minutes and hops into the shower. He jokes about the sand in his bathing suit. The waves were a little too much for the city boy.
She lies on the bed, a little itchy, and tries to read the novel she brought with her. She’s distracted by the sound of the shower and the looks on her friend’s faces when she told them. They wouldn’t say anything, wouldn’t state outright that they thought she was making a bad decision, but the blank stares burned into her like the rays of the sun.
But she smiles now and feels that warmth again, from her body and the steam of the shower. She can think of no better place to be.
