When I say to myself, "Self, go to H&M and get a dress for Lucille's ball (j-school prom)" That is a shopping plan I can succesfully execute.

But when I walk into Macy's with a vague idea of having to Christmas shop for Mom and boyfriend, bad...bad things happen. I basically lose two hours, spend no money except for eating pretzels. Because there is a food court in that Macy's.

NEVER, EVER GO INTO THE MACY'S FLAGSHIP A WEEK BEFORE XMAS DURING A ONE DAY SALE. I have been to Cairo, I have almost been crushed to death at the Dublin St. Patty's Day Parade, but 34th street on a Wednesday Christmas sale is too much.

Then: December 1999

1. Age: 13

2. Romantic Status: Single

3. Occupation: Middle school student

4. Fun night out: Er? Having Gretchen and Amanda come over and maybe go out to Bertucci's with my parents?

5. My BFFs: Gretchen and Amanda.

6. I spent way too much time: Being an angsty teenager, worrying about what others thought. But I suppose that's a structural problem of being 13.

7. I spent not enough time: I don't know, I didn't have much time that I had control over, but possibly not enough time blowing off homework.

8. I wanted to be when I grew up: Fiction writer, I guess? Actress, possibly. I remember that was a phase at one point.

9. Biggest concern: WHY I DIDN'T HAVE TOO MANY FRIENDDDDS. WHY PEOPLE DON'T LIKE ME.

10. What my biggest concern should have been: Not trying to alienate the people I was friends with.

11. Where did I live: The Milf, in my lovely but otherwise indistinct room in my parent's house.

12. Dumbest thing I did that year: Trying to get my friends to break out of our house on New Year's Eve and go to the city for the millennium. Fortunately, my two sane friends talked me out of that one.

13. If I could go back now and talk to myself I would say: Hey you! Those wacky stories about how the cool kids in middle school turn out being the lame-os? It's true. Except that it's not going to get better for quite a while. Biding your time is not a bad thing, but keep reading and keep writing. Also, Egypt is hot.

14. Picture of myself then: I don't have anything before 2004 on this computer.

Now: December 2009

1. Age: 23

2. Romantic Status: Boyfriend of nearly one year

3. Occupation: grad student of journalism, reporter

4. Fun night out: Chill bar with the college friends or possibly RW1 people. Dinner and drinks with boyfriend.

5. My BFFs: Still gretchen and amanda, faith, fiona, julie, andrew, alice, katie, liz, and yes, I suppose boyfriend

6. I spend way too much time: Taking care of other people's shit, even when I don't like it.

7. I spend not enough time: Taking a break. Letting myself go on adventures

8. I want to be when I grow up: A good friend, a confidant, and a working writer.

9. Biggest concern: Getting a job in an industry that's having a serious identity crisis in a bad economy with tens of thousands of dollars in debt behind me.

10. What my biggest concern should be: Yeah, that's pretty much it.

11. Where do I live: A 3 bedroom apartment in New York City, with two other journalists and a leaky faucet.

12. Dumbest thing I have done this year: paid too much for this apartment.

13. What I think I would say to myself in 10 years:

14. Picture of me now: (with roomie J)

1. What do I miss most from 1999: The ease of someone taking care of your basic needs, the lack of stress from a job or not job.

2. What do I miss least from 1999: Not being comfortable in my own skin

3. What have I accomplished in 10 years that I am most proud of: I graduated from high school without losing my mind, found good people and took some pretty crazy (to taylor, 1999) risks which mostly paid off.

4. What have I NOT accomplished in 10 years that I wish I had: allowing myself to be good at what I do.
